Brahmatal Trek- A Trek To A Frozen Himalayan Lake Haven

Bramhtal Trek

Picture yourself in a snow-covered forest. The only noise is of your boots crushing the new powder and a whispering of wind through ancient oaks. Up ahead, the trail opens out to showcase a breathtaking panorama of the Himalayas that loom large against a deep blue sky — iconic peaks like Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti stare back at us in full glory. Well, it`s not just a dream it is the reality of Brahmatal Trek – one of most delightful winter treks in Uttarakhand.

The trail leads you Brahmatal Lake which is a mythical one that transforms to a solid glass of ice in the winters. It’s a journey that beautifully weaves adventure with bucolic beauty — alpine meadows, deep forests and incomparable vistas of some of the highest mountains in India. Whether you’re a trekker with some experience or just starting out on your first of many Himalayan adventures, Brahmatal Trek remains an experience to be remembered.

About the Brahmatal Trek

Situated under the shadows of Uttarakhand Himalayas, the Brahmatal Trek climbs to a top elevation up to 12,250 feet. The name of the trek is a little bit mythological; people believe that it happened to be the lake where Lord Brahma, the creator (In Hindu mythology), meditated for thousands of years. This religious mistique gives a magic aspect to this already enchanted landscape.

What makes Brahmatal special, how is it different from other winter treks? First, its accessibility. Though most high-altitude treks are not accessible during winter, the Brahmatal is open and safe because it provides a real snow trek. Second, the views are just absolutely stunning. Brahmatal is quite the opposite of many treks, where you have to wait till the summit day for unbeatable view of high peaks; here you can have a great view of the Garhwal Himalayas as soon as we set out on Day 1. The hike is extremely varied as well, passing through picturesque villages, thick rhododendron and oak forests and snow covered open spaces.

Highlights of the Brahmatal Trek

Each day of the The Brahmatal Trek is a world filled with mysteries and experiences that are nothing short of magical. These are some all-time highlights that makes this trek a ‘must do’.

Unrivaled Views of Himalayan Giants

The showstopper on the Brahmatal Trek is insane 360-degree views of Himalayas. At points along the trail, you have an up-close view of majestic snow-capped peaks. The mighty Mt. Trishul (23,359 ft ) and the graceful Mt. Nanda Ghunti (20,699 ft) are the most well known among them. You’ll also see other well-known peaks such as Chaukhamba, Neelkanth and Kamet too adding to a scenery that will leave you dumbstruck.

Magical Forest Trails

The hike goes through some of the most beautiful forests in the Himalayas. You will pass beneath canopies of old oak and fire-red rhododendron trees. During the winter, these woodlands turn into a fairy wonderland and some of those branches fall under the weight of snow in magical tunnels along the trail. It’s nice to sitting there in the silence of the woods, all you can hear are a few birds that refuse to go away and never chirp again… gives you lots of time for meditation though.

The Frozen Alpine Lakes

The journey includes two magnificent high-altitude lakes, Bekaltal and the namesake Brahmatal. Both lakes freeze over during December and January, forming a sheet of ice on top. Camping besides the quiet Bekaltal, then later making your way to the magical Brahmatal Lake are experiences of peace and awe. A similar view of the frozen Brahmatal Lake with sky reflection on top was also something that I’ll never forget.

Perfect Photography Opportunities

Brahmatal is paradise for any photography lover. Every twist of the trail gives you a new frameable photo op. Am sure you don’t want to miss the golden light of sunrise striking the Himalayan peaks, frost patterns on leaves, frozen lakes and incredible joy-inspiring smiles on your fellow trekkers’ faces. It’s a white, blue and green canvas with the limitless photo possibilities to catch the natural beauty of Himalayas.
